A post that takes three hard swings to start can turn into a crew-stopping problem once it hits packed clay, rock, frost, or old fill. Knowing how to choose a post driver means looking past the basic question of whether a machine can drive a post. The right question is whether it can drive your posts, in your ground, at the pace your work requires, without beating up the operator or becoming a service problem halfway through the season.

A post driver is production equipment. Choose it around the work in front of it, not the lowest purchase price or the biggest number printed on a spec sheet.

Start With the Post and the Job

The post is the first hard limit. A driver must fit the post diameter and shape correctly. Round pipe, T-posts, square signposts, wood posts, and specialty fence materials do not all use the same driving head, adapter, or method. Gas-powered post drivers

They bring their own power to the job and can move with a crew across rough terrain. Internal components that can be repaired or overhauled have real value when the tool is used hard for years.
